Should you go second-hand or new?
The obvious reason to go second has is cost – these parts will generally cost less than the brand-new alternative. Sometimes you will need to go second hand if the vehicle you are purchasing for is a little older and a compatible new part isn’t available. Whatever the reason, as with that has previously been used, there’s always a risk of the part failing or breaking sooner than if it had been bought new.
With new parts, you have the added security and peace of mind that the part is unused and will often come with a manufacturer’s warranty. You’ll expect to pay more for new parts, but if you can afford to buy new, this would be our recommendation.
Does the part fit your vehicle?
When looking to identify the right part for your vehicle, you have a few different ways to ensure the replacement is compatible.
You can use the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to check against the manufacturers’ information, to ensure the part is right for your vehicles make, model and age. If you are looking online, you can often use your vehicles registration number to search the larger auto-part sites and the site’s (if setup correctly) will only show the parts that will fit.
The part you are replacing may sometime hold a code somewhere on it, which you can use to reference those that are available online. If the code matches, you can be fairly confident that the replacement part is compatible.
